I live with my husband and my daughter in Cambridge. I used to be a wet lab technician (technicians working in the lab) for 20 years. My last subject was malaria and before that I worked on dementia. I lived and worked in Turkey and The Netherlands. People say I have green fingers, love gardening and cats. Our neighbours cat adopted us for the last five years and we love him.

Finding a cure for Malaria is very important to stop the disease. At the moment there is no effective vaccine for malaria but few drugs that many people cannot afford. Malaria effect poor areas around the world like Africa or far east countries. The parasite is very clever and develops a resistance for the drugs and they start not to work any more. In the absence of drugs more and more people will be infected and die.
My work is to test new drugs against the parasite. But that is also not easy to find. Drug trials takes years and not cheap.
I also try to change the DNA of the parasite in the lab and make it less evil.

My Typical Day:
Most of my day is in the lab. I put gloves and lab coat in the lab. I isolate lots of DNA and try to change the DNA of the parasite so that it would not be able to infect people.

My day is divided between the lab and the office. Most of the days I am in my lab coat in the lab.
I work with DNA most of the time. I also grew mosquitos in the lab since they carry the MAlaria parasite and can be used as a model organism to study the parasite. When I am not in the lab, I am either in meetings or in the office, recording my data and protocols.
