Hi Paulina! I’m doing PhD research, and there are many different groups and organisations that can pay for PhD research. Universities, industrial companies, and government funding bodies (eg the EPSRC) can all fund research. Funding can cover your tuition fees, the costs of doing the research (buying supplies, using instruments etc.), and also provides the researcher with a stipend, which is money towards the cost of living. In some cases, PhDs can be self funded. This means the researcher pays for these things themselves. Hope that helps 🙂

At the moment my work is funded by a charity called the Wellcome Trust who are one of the biggest charities in the world. They fund all types of medical research both here in the UK and across the globe. The project I work on includes groups here in the UK in Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh and one in Lisbon , Portugal. The Trust provide the money for our salaries, computers and all of the lab work.
