Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is caused by the formation of structures called plaques, which are clumps of protein that negatively affect how the brain works. Changes occur throughout the brain, but one of the main areas that is affected is a region called the hippocampus (which is shaped a bit like a seahorse)! This area is very important in making and storing our memories, which is why people with AD have difficulties remembering things.
