Hi Jack. The coronavirus (science name: SARS-CoV-2) infects the lungs. The virus is taken in through the mouth/nose/eyes and enters the lungs. Once there, it sticks itself to a protein on the surface of the lungs. This protein is called ACE-2. When the virus sticks to this protein it unlocks the lung cells, like a key unlocking a door. The virus then climbs into the cells of the lungs and starts making copies of itself which infect other lung cells or escapes through the mouth/nose and infects other people. The more cells in the lungs the virus unlocks and infects, the more poorly the patient will feel as the virus damages the cells.
