If I wasn’t doing a PhD I think that I would still be working in science somehow! I think I would have probably started with a lab based job in a university, learning some different lab techniques. But I have also always enjoyed writing and so I think that I would enjoy going into a career which combines my love of science and writing! There are lots of different jobs which you can do with a science background so the options are endless really!
If I hadn’t done a PhD (which was some time ago now i’m afraid) I think I would probably have looked for some kind of science communication job – so working in a museum or with a charity like Wellcome to develop ways to communicate science.
If I hadn’t chosen science as a career, I would have done music. I started playing the piano when I was little and continued my studies in parallel with school all the way to university. At the point I gave my biggest even concert but failed two of my subjects at university so I realised I could carry one doing both. I chose science because I thought that for music I needed talent and I wasn’t sure I had it whereas even if I wasn’t a genius, I could find jobs in science or science-related fields.
