I’m relatively early on in my project. One thing we have found is a set of genes that may play a specific role in Alzheimer’s disease. So my next step is to investigate what exactly these genes might be doing. Hopefully it’ll shed some light onto some of the processes that happen within the brain during Alzheimer’s as we still have a lot to learn.
I’ve been lucky to be involved in several interesting projects, but I’ll choose one to tell you about here 🙂 I once worked in a team that were looking at making titanium metal plates ‘spiky’ in order to kill bacteria. We thought this might work well for repair of the jaw in the face, because bacterial infection can be a common problem. I was involved in research and testing to see if different types of bacteria (rounded and rod-like) would die when they were trying to grow on the surface of the metal. We hoped that human cells would survive because they have a larger surface area, kind of like how certain people can lay on a bed of nails and not get hurt!
