Alexandra, did you know that malaria parasites are transmitted from person to person by mosquitoes? Probably yes right? But how about the fact that only female mosquitos bite humans and therefore only females transmit the disease? Of course this applies to all mosquito-transmitted disesases that include many viruses. The reason why females bite humans and other mammals is that they need the proteins in the blood to make their eggs.

Did you know that gravity has a big impact on our physical health? That’s because we are adapted to life on earth, with gravity pulling us down. We need strong hearts to make sure our blood doesn’t pool at our feet and strong bones that can withstand the forces our bodies experience due to gravity. So what happens when astronauts leave earth for months to live on the space station? Microgravity is an environment, like the at the space station, where there is very little gravitational force compared to earth. This is what allows astronauts to float around. However, without gravity to pull them down, the astronauts’ hearts become lazy, their muscles waste and their bones become very weak! Astronauts have to do lots of exercise on the space station to combat this. However when they return to earth they must undergo physical rehabilitation to make their bodies strong again. Some astronauts even suffer from diseases such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis at a younger age compared to other people due to their long-term exposure to microgravity.

I will add to Alena’s answer by saying it’s quite interesting that if you can get a disease known as sickle cell anaemia, you can’t get malaria! This is because in sickle cell anaemia, the blood cells are the wrong shape to be able to carry the malaria virus. So if you have the faulty gene that causes sickle cell anaemia you are basically resistant to malaria. This is why there are so many cases of sickle cell anaemia in sub-saharan Africa where mosquitos carrying malaria are very common – natural selection has kept sickle cell anaemia around to protect against malaria…
