It may not be particularly exciting or deadly, but one of the most well known diseases is amongst the most difficult to cure – the common cold! One of the huge obstacles to finding a cure is that there are over 160 different ‘strains’ of the virus which causes the common cold – so you actually need to find a cure for all 160 strains if you are going to find a cure for the common cold overall. There are also examples of other diseases which are very complicated (such as cancer). Again, it would be very difficult to find a cure for every cancer because ‘cancer’ actually is a name given to a collection of similar diseases – so each type of cancer is slightly different.
